1000 Babies: Why Director Najeem Koya Chose Neena Gupta Over a Malayalam Actress

Malayalam filmmaker Najeem Koya had a clear reason for casting veteran actor Neena Gupta in his mystery thriller series 1000 Babies. Despite having several accomplished actors available in the Malayalam film industry, Koya wanted someone whose presence would feel new to the local audience and allow viewers to focus more on the character than on the actor’s previous screen image.

The seven-episode crime thriller began streaming on Disney+ Hotstar on October 18, 2024. Directed by Najeem Koya, the series stars Neena Gupta and Rahman in key roles and was released in Malayalam as well as Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Marathi and Bengali.

Why Najeem Koya chose Neena Gupta

Speaking about the casting of Neena Gupta, Koya said that the actor herself had asked him why he wanted her for the role when Malayalam cinema already had many talented performers.

For the director, however, that was exactly the point. He wanted an actor who would not immediately remind Malayalam viewers of characters they had seen before.

Koya described Gupta as an Indian icon and explained that his decision was not simply about attracting a wider audience. In his view, casting a familiar Malayalam actor could have led viewers to connect the performer with earlier roles. Bringing Neena Gupta into the story gave him an opportunity to present the character with fewer such associations.

He also believed that the transformation would surprise the Malayalam audience, particularly because Gupta was being seen in a very different setting and character.

Although 1000 Babies was sometimes described around its release as Gupta’s Malayalam debut, she had worked in Malayalam cinema much earlier. She appeared in Vasthuhara and Aham in the 1990s. The series therefore marked her return to Malayalam entertainment after a long gap rather than her first Malayalam project.

The story was initially planned as a film

Koya had been interested in making a web series for some time. During the pandemic, he watched several international shows on streaming platforms and became increasingly interested in the longer storytelling format.

The idea behind 1000 Babies was initially considered for a film. However, Koya felt that the story was too large to be compressed into a conventional two-hour movie.

A web series gave him more room to develop the characters and the central mystery. When the concept was presented to Disney+ Hotstar, the project moved ahead as a Malayalam original series.

1000 Babies also followed Koya’s 2018 directorial debut Kaly. His filmography includes work as a writer on Malayalam films before he moved into direction.

1000 Babies is an investigative crime thriller built around a disturbing past, concealed secrets and a series of mysterious events.

As the story develops, cryptic messages and deaths draw the police into an investigation that gradually reveals links between events separated by several years. Rahman plays the investigating police officer, while Neena Gupta has a central role in the mystery.
