Bengaluru is facing a tragic situation as an under-construction building in Babusapalya collapsed amid heavy rains on October 22, 2024. Reports indicate that 17 workers are feared trapped under the rubble, with rescue operations ongoing. This incident has highlighted the severe impact of relentless rainfall on the city’s infrastructure and the lives of its residents.

Details of the Incident

The building collapse occurred in Anjanadri Layout, Horamavu Agara, near Hennur. Eyewitnesses reported hearing a loud noise before the structure fell. Local authorities and rescue teams rushed to the scene shortly after the collapse was reported. Initial reports confirmed that one worker has died, while several others have been rescued from the debris.

As of now, 14 workers have been successfully rescued, but the situation remains critical for those still trapped beneath the collapsed structure. The ongoing rescue efforts involve firefighters and local authorities who are working tirelessly to clear debris and locate any survivors.

Impact of Heavy Rains

Bengaluru has been experiencing heavy rainfall for several days, leading to severe flooding across various parts of the city. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) reported that 186.2 mm of rain was recorded at the GKVK observatory, surpassing previous records. This downpour has caused significant waterlogging, disrupting daily life and stranding many residents.

Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar addressed the media regarding the situation, stating that while they cannot control nature, they are taking all necessary steps to assist those affected. He emphasized that relief efforts are underway to manage the flooding and support affected families.

Rescue Operations

Rescue operations began immediately after the collapse, with teams working around the clock to locate and save those trapped. As of now, three people have been rescued, but concerns remain for those still unaccounted for. The local government has also deployed teams from both state and national disaster response forces to aid in these efforts.

Shivakumar mentioned that pumps have been activated to drain water from low-lying areas and apartments affected by flooding. However, many residents have had to evacuate their homes due to rising water levels, with some being rescued using boats from inundated areas like Yelahanka.

Community Response

The local community has come together to support rescue efforts. Neighbors are providing food and shelter to those displaced by the flooding. Many citizens are also volunteering their time to assist with rescue operations or provide supplies to affected families.

Authorities have urged residents to stay indoors unless absolutely necessary due to hazardous conditions on the roads. Schools in affected areas have been closed until further notice, impacting children’s education as families deal with this crisis.

Future Weather Forecast

Looking ahead, the IMD forecasts that light to moderate thundershowers may continue in Bengaluru over the next few days. However, there is hope that heavy rains will taper off soon, allowing for recovery efforts to proceed more smoothly. As rescue operations continue in Babusapalya, local authorities remain committed to ensuring safety and restoring normalcy for all affected residents.
