Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Chief Mohan Bhagwat has recently called for unity among Hindus, drawing lessons from the ongoing violence against the Hindu community in Bangladesh. Speaking at the annual Vijayadashami event on October 12, 2024, Bhagwat emphasized that the situation in Bangladesh serves as a crucial learning opportunity for Hindus in India. He highlighted that the recent unrest has revealed the need for Hindus to unite and protect themselves against potential threats.
During his address, Bhagwat condemned the violence faced by Hindus in Bangladesh, stating that it is a reflection of deeper issues within society. He noted that this violence is not merely a political issue but a humanitarian crisis affecting minorities. “What happened in our neighbouring Bangladesh is a learning for us,” he said, urging Hindus to recognize the importance of solidarity. He pointed out that for the first time, Hindus in Bangladesh have come together to defend themselves against attacks, suggesting that such unity is essential for their safety.
Bhagwat warned that as long as radical violence persists, minorities—including Hindus—will remain vulnerable. He stated, “If we are weak, we are inviting atrocity,” stressing that unity and empowerment are necessary to counteract threats. He also criticized narratives in Bangladesh portraying India as a threat and mentioned how some factions there are advocating for alignment with Pakistan due to perceived dangers from India.
The RSS chief highlighted the growing influence of what he termed “Deep State,” “Wokeism,” and “Cultural Marxism,” which he believes threaten cultural traditions. He urged society to protect its values and traditions from these influences, asserting that they aim to disrupt societal harmony.
Context of Violence in Bangladesh
The violence against Hindus in Bangladesh has escalated significantly in recent months, particularly following political upheaval. After former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation amid protests, there have been widespread attacks on the Hindu community across multiple districts. Reports indicate over 200 incidents of violence against Hindus during a recent three-day period alone, leading to fatalities and numerous injuries.
Experts note a correlation between political instability and increased violence against religious minorities in Bangladesh. The Hindu community, which comprises about 8% of the population, has historically been targeted during such crises. In light of this ongoing violence, many Hindus are living in fear, with reports indicating that they are hesitant to leave their homes or open their doors without confirming who is outside.
Call for Action
Bhagwat’s remarks come at a time when there is heightened concern for the safety of Hindus in Bangladesh. He urged the Indian government and the global Hindu community to support their counterparts facing persecution abroad. “Hindus must be united and empowered,” he reiterated, emphasizing that weakness is not an option.
He also mentioned the responsibility of society to protect itself while waiting for governmental intervention. Bhagwat’s speech reflects a broader narrative within Indian politics concerning national identity and the protection of cultural heritage.
