Anil Ambani’s Reliance Group announced a significant entry into Bhutan’s renewable energy sector, unveiling plans to develop a massive solar and hydroelectric project. This initiative marks a pivotal moment for both the company and the Himalayan nation, as it aims to bolster clean energy production and support Bhutan’s sustainability goals.

Strategic Partnership with Bhutan

The Reliance Group has entered into a strategic partnership with Druk Holding and Investments Ltd (DHI), the commercial arm of the Royal Government of Bhutan. This collaboration will focus on developing 1,270 megawatts of renewable energy, comprising 500 MW of solar power and 770 MW of hydroelectric power. This partnership is noted as the largest foreign direct investment by a private firm in Bhutan’s renewable energy landscape.

Establishment of Reliance Enterprises

To facilitate these ambitious projects, Reliance has established a new entity called Reliance Enterprises, jointly promoted by Reliance Infrastructure Ltd and Reliance Power Ltd. This company will concentrate on enhancing sustainable energy solutions and implementing smart distribution systems across Bhutan. The formation of this new venture underscores Reliance’s commitment to investing in Bhutan’s green energy sector while also exploring innovative technologies that can further enhance energy efficiency.

Details of the Solar Project

The 500 MW solar plant will be located in Gelephu Mindfulness City and is set to be executed in two phases of 250 MW each over the next two years. Once operational, this facility will become the largest solar installation in Bhutan, significantly contributing to the country’s renewable energy output and helping combat climate change. The land for the solar project has already been earmarked, with site assessments and technical studies currently underway. This project not only aims to produce clean energy but also represents the single largest investment in Bhutan’s renewable sector to date.

Hydro Project Development

In addition to the solar initiative, Reliance Enterprises will also undertake the development of the 770 MW Chamkharchhu-1 hydroelectric project. This project is classified as a run-of-the-river hydro facility under a concession model aligned with Bhutanese government policies. The collaboration between Reliance and DHI signifies a groundbreaking joint venture between an Indian private sector company and Bhutan’s government in the hydroelectric domain.

Commitment to Sustainable Development

Ujjwal Deep Dahal, CEO of DHI, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership, stating that it leverages both organizations’ strengths in green energy development. He emphasized their commitment to delivering world-class clean energy projects that would benefit both India and Bhutan. The collaboration is expected to support Bhutan’s net-zero goals while also promoting economic growth through sustainable practices inspired by Bhutan’s Gross National Happiness Index.

Future Prospects

Reliance Group’s foray into Bhutan’s renewable energy market is not just about generating power; it reflects a broader vision for sustainable development in the region. The company plans to work closely with government-owned entities in Bhutan to implement infrastructure projects that align with environmental goals. Furthermore, Reliance Enterprises will focus on establishing smart distribution and metering systems across the country to enhance its energy infrastructure.

This initiative represents a significant step forward for both Reliance Group and Bhutan as they navigate the challenges posed by climate change while fostering economic growth through renewable energy investments.
